Lets get into it!

First step will be, unsurprisingly, opening the sucker!

You only need up to 3:20- Not too hard, just be carful with the glut of brittle plastic tabs

After pulling out the entrails, we turn our attention to our cables

First things first, now's the time to see if you can get your DB15 adaptor on there. If everything is good it's as easy as just plugging it in and tightening it, as you would with and VGA or PCI cable.

Now to the weirder cables- You only need the wider black one.

Here's where your toggleswitch, cables, and resistor comes in. Find the end with the purple and brown cables to the two edge ports.

You'll want to plug your cables into the two ports, and attach the other ends to your toggleswitch. Polarity doesn't matter here, what you want is just for the purple cable and brown cable connected by a switch, ideally with enough length from the port that the switch can be repositioned later.

Now position your cable ports "vertically" (switch ports at the top), and pull out that resistor. One end will go on the bottom left port, and the other will go into the 4th port above it, so that all in all the resistor spans 5 ports. To be sure youre right check that the resistor corresponds to a "red" end and a "black" end. Once agan, orientation does not matter.

  • No soldering. I have a hand tremor and while I can and do solder things, its easiier not to. In addition to this I hope to make this more accessible for people whi have less experience with electronic surgery.
  • No perma-damage to the imac G3- its a relic, I want to perserve it in case I decide to become a ludite and return to the beautiful world of OS 9.
  • I want this sucker to be able to maintain as much of its exterior as possible, including the beautiful venticular port cover- the goal is to build around this and to take it as an opportunity to beef it up,
  • I want it to be as useful/usable as possible. I want that tray disc reader working. In addition, I'd like speakers functional,

PARTS

  • imac G3 tray version
  • VGA to DB15(F) -https://www.ebay.ca/itm/271137033572
  • toggle switch (I used a replacement electronic switch from a local hardware store)
  • resistor (5W 10 ohms) -https://www.amazon.ca/uxcell-Tolerance-Resistors-Electronic-Experiments/dp/B07RWF466H (I caved and bought from the devil's website)
  • shrink tubing or twist wire caps (at least 2)
  • wire! I'd recommend circuit cables- two M/M minimum

SUPPLIES

  • phillips head screwdriver
  • wire cutter & stripper (or scissors if you're talented!)
  • second monitor connected to same source PC as the imac G3
note! DB15 is hardest to obtain and most essential. if you can only find a male db15, you'll need a gender changer. for the VGA output its easy to find an adaptor cable to make either M or F work.
